Meet the Team

Reuben Simmons

Reuben Simmons

Founder, Executive Director

Reuben Simmons is a stalwart figure in Beacon’s public service landscape, dedicating two decades to serving the community within the highway department, including a tenure as Highway Superintendent. His leadership extended beyond official roles, as he also served as president of the local union for two consecutive terms. Reuben’s academic pursuits include an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Dutchess Community College and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the Catholic University of America.

In 2011, Reuben spearheaded a campaign aimed at fostering better relations between city workers and the public, igniting a deeper understanding of the need for citizen empowerment in addressing community issues. This catalyzed the formalization of I Am Beacon as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2012, alongside a dedicated group of individuals sharing his vision.

Under Reuben’s guidance as founder and former president, I Am Beacon flourished, operating solely on a volunteer basis for its first 11 years. The organization has since become a cornerstone of community support, responding to local needs through educational outreach initiatives. Its focus areas include youth education, combating food insecurity, raising mental health awareness, and fostering community bonds.

Over the past decade, I Am Beacon’s impact has been profound, organizing over 50 events, distributing 327 turkeys to families in need, providing 800+ school supply kits, and awarding more than $33,000 in college scholarships to Beacon’s youth. Reuben’s unwavering commitment to community service extends beyond administrative duties; he has actively coached youth football and basketball for over 20 years, embodying his dedication to the holistic well-being and development of Beacon’s young generation.
